I'm back at the kpop designs this week courtesy of SHINee and their repackage album and promotional single of the same name, Married To The Music!
Shoutout to my friend Ashley who has informed me that these are by far the creepiest nails I've ever done lol. I guess she's probably right considering this design features Jonghyun's lips stuck into a cake, Key being decapitated, Onew's nose being grabbed by a hand in the sink, and Taemin's eyeballs floating around in that glowing blue/green drink from the beginning of the mv.
If you've seen the music video though, (you can check it out here if you haven't), you can probably tell that I was very scene-specific with this design - all the scenes are painted almost exactly as they appear in the mv. To me the context makes it less creepy, but maybe that's just me, haha! Maybe it's also because it let's me reassure myself that it technically wasn't me coming up with a design that contains decapitation out of nowhere, it was SHINee's fault :P
This design was actually super hard to paint for me. I decided that the best course of action was to use entirely nail polish for this design and to skip the acrylic paint - after my topcoat mishap a few weeks ago I didn't want to risk ruining this design. This sounds like a good idea in theory until you remember just how hard it is to do this kind of painting with polish. It gets sticky and dries super fast which means that once you've mixed a colour with the polishes you'd better use it right away or else it's going to be dry when you go back to it.
Nail polish is also a pain to blend on your nail. One of the techniques I discovered and used for blending in this design (mostly for the eyeballs) is to paint with a few different shades and then dip your brush in acetone (making sure there's some acetone on the brush, not just cleaning it) and gently rub it over the paint you want to blend. It seemed to work pretty well for blending the shadows on the eyeballs which was great!
I also find painting facial features in colour to be a challenge within itself (aside from nails my preferred medium is pencil). Getting the right colours and making them blend is such a challenge and is something I definitely could use some practice with!
All in all though this design was really fun to do and I feel accomplished having actually finished it and had it turn out decently!
Also, to up the creep-factor even more, I decided to make all of the body parts the members lose glow in the dark!
It's too bad SHINee didn't have their comeback in October, this would be such a perfect design for Halloween, don't you think?
Be prepared for a very long list of products used - I was creating a lot of franken-colours by mixing polishes so there a quite a few polishes listed that don't actually appear on the nails in their pure form.
